Gioachino Rossini’s light one-act opera, L’Occasione fa il Ladro (Opportunity
Makes a Thief) is a delightfully funny, beautifully sung tale of identity theft,
and mixed-up rival lovers. Rossini had the amazing talent of making his
music vividly express humour with finding plots to match. Through a
cleverly entangled web of amusing obstacles, ill-fated deceptions and
lucky twists of fate, those who are meant for each other eventually realise
their hopes and dreams.
There could be no better choice than the Rossini Opera Festival to present
this opera as it is unrivalled in interpreting Rossini. The brilliant staging
for this production was created by the late Jean-Pierre Ponnelle. The big
star is Russian soprano Olga Peretyatko who has won several awards in
international competitions such as Plácido Domingo’s Operalia.
The leading man, a forgivable thief, is Russian tenor Maxim Mironov,
considered one of today’s greatest Rossini interpreters. The Orchestra
Filarmonica Gioachino Rossini will be conducted by Christopher Franklin
who is sought-after as a guest conductor by many of the world’s finest
orchestras.
